If like us, sometimes you want to be in the know without having to pick up a newspaper or stare into a screen, we've got the perfect recommendations for you.
Little known fact: morning commutes were made for pop culture podcasts. Okay, maybe that's not true, but sometimes there's nothing nicer than whipping out a podcast to keep you company on the Luas, while you get ready in the mornings, or as a way to just take a break from all the screens.
It can be intimidating to open up your streaming app, try find something maybe worth listening to, and commit to an hour long episode. There's an element of risk there. Which is why we've compiled a list of some of our favourite pop culture podcasts to save you next time you're in a pinch for some background listening.
Antfrodite on Fluently Forward
Also known as Sassy Psychic Reader, Aunfrodite is a Youtube sensation. While he doesn't have a podcast platform, he is the king of online tarot readings related to celebrities and he's also a big astrology lover.
He featured on 'Fluently Forward' recently, a podcast we love with Shannon McNamara (also highly recommended by us), where they dived into readings on some of the biggest people in the limelight at the moment. Think Amber Heard and Johnny Depp, Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn, and even Ezra Miller.
The Unpopular Opinion
We're not biased or anything, but isn't the Irish accent just made for podcasting? Jen and Carla are two Dublin ladies who don't take celebrities (or themselves) too seriously. Recently, they took the piss out of Jason Derulo on their pod and it was magical.
They don't just talk about celebrities though, their podcast is all encompassing of pop culture, including topics like reality TV competitions, things they've done to show-off to the person they fancy, and terrible birthday parties.
We recently discovered the 'Shameless' podcast and we cannot get enough of it. Listening to Michelle and Zara will invite you to be a part of inside jokes like "are you a tank or a teaspoon?", stay up to date on what's going on in the world of entertainment, and dive into older stories that are unforgettable.
With two instalments of the podcast every week, they are such a reliable source for your weekly recommended pop culture intake.
The High Low
Dolly Alderton and Pandora Sykes dive into high and lowbrow pop culture stories from February 2017 to December 2020. Their laughs (and innuendos) are infectious and the intelligence that they bring to celebrity and traditionally "low-brow" news is second to none.
It's thoughtful, considerate, and light-hearted all at the one time. They even offer recommendations for the best things to read, listen to, and watch. Unfortunately, the podcast wrapped up back in 2020 (as if the year wasn't hard enough), but the catalog of episodes they have make for heart-wrenching and giggle-inducing listening.
These podcasts are proof that the likes of pop culture, celebrity, and reality television are no frivolous, empty topics. They contain so much for us to dissect and enjoy beyond the stigma. Plus, they're absolutely gas.
