This documentary looks back to Persepolis, 1971, when the Shah of Iran threw an opulent party to celebrate 2500 years of the Persian monarchy. The lavish celebration was held at a specially constructed oasis surrounded by a city of tents. The 60 world leaders in attendance enjoyed a five-course banquet and a pageant featuring thousands of soldiers dressed in historical costume. Its decadence had disastrous consequences, as it led to a terminal break between the Shah (self-proclaimed ‘king of kings’) and his people. This film looks at the party itself and its repercussions, down to the present day.
