Set over the seven tumultuous days leading up to the partition of India and Pakistan, this film gives a detailed account of those dramatic final days of British rule when chaos reigned in. To retell the story, the programme uses first-hand testimony (voiced by actors) from the perspective of ordinary villagers and townspeople caught up in the events, as well as archive footage and a cast of experts. The film reveals how the joys of Independence Day in India and Pakistan were overshadowed by misery in the summer of 1947 and explores just why the violence was so intense.
