Despite him being more known for the likes of 'Thor Ragnarok' and 'Jojo Rabbit', director Taika Waititi built a substantial career in comedy in New Zealand.
Indeed, one of his most celebrated movies is undoubtedly 'Hunt For The Wilderpeople', a 2016 action-comedy starring Sam Neill and a breakout role for Julian Dennison as Ricky Baker, a ne'er-do-well child who lands in a foster home and subsequently goes on the run after a tragedy. The premise of the movie is one that's tinged with both darkness and sadness, yet it's unquestionably hilarious - something that 2FM broadcaster Ciara King latched onto immediately when she chose it for this week's edition of 'The Revisit'.
Ciara King is best known for her weekly show on 2FM that she hosts with Chris Greene, who also appeared on the first season of 'The Revisit' where he chose 'Paul Blart: Mall Cop'. As well as her show, Ciara is also a published author and wrote 'Ciara's Diary', a semi-fictional trip through the mind of a warped teenager in rural Galway on the cusp of adulthood and the new millennium.
"He's obsessed with death, when you think about it," Ciara notes, citing his other works, 'Boy', 'Eagle Vs. Shark', and of course, 'Jojo Rabbit'. Indeed, even though it's set in New Zealand, there's a certain flavour about 'Hunt For The Wilderpeople' that feels familiar to Irish audiences. "Sam Neill's character is 100% every Connemara man I've ever met, no question," Ciara points out with a laugh.
Released in 2016, 'Hunt For The Wilderpeople' was shot on a tight budget in Taika Waititi's native New Zealand, and went on to become a huge success in both New Zealand and across the globe. It premiered at Sundance later that year, and eventually reached a near-perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. Empire Magazine named it as the film of 2016, and made it to No.5 on our list of the same year.
Here's this week episode.
Last week's episode featured Virgin Media News Correspondent Richard Chambers picking '90s surf-action flick 'Point Break', with comedian Mario Rosenstock choosing '70s blockbuster classic 'Jaws' the week before.
