The manipulative, virtuoso brilliance of Hitchcock’s foray into Grand Guignol remains undimmed. He relocated horror to a recognisably contemporary America, while upping the ante in shocks and surprises. If few are now unaware of what befalls Marion Crane at the Bates Motel, the film boasts more than enough richly nuanced details to keep us constantly amused, intrigued and pleasingly ill at ease.
