Jair Bolsonaro is beefing with the three-time MTV Movie Award winner.
As far as political-celebrity feuds go, the most well-known examples include Donald Trump versus pretty much every celebrity out there.
However, Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro - who, funnily enough, is referred to as "Trump of the Tropics" - has went out and gotten himself his own celebrity feud. In a speech earlier this week, Bolsonaro claimed with absolutely no facts to back it up that Leonardo DiCaprio was responsible for the recent spate of fires in the Amazon.
"This Leonardo DiCaprio’s a cool guy, isn’t he? Giving money for the Amazon to be torched," Bolsonaro said in front of his supporters on a Facebook livestream.
Without delving too far into the intricacies of Brazilian politics, some believe that Bolsonaro's batshit claim comes from a story regarding four firefighters who were alleged to have started fires in the Amazon and were somehow working in conjunction with an unnamed NGO.
Of course, there is zero evidence to suggest any of that is true, but it's enough in this utterly f*cked up world to simply repeat some outlandish theory and people will accept it as fact thanks to Facebook and social media engineering.
Anyway, Leonardo DiCaprio released a statement on his personal Instagram and while not specifically mentioning Bolsonaro's claims, he addressed the claim in no uncertain terms. "At this time of crisis for the Amazon, I support the people of Brazil working to save their natural and cultural heritage," DiCaprio said.
"The future of these irreplaceable ecosystems is at stake and I am proud to stand with the groups protecting them. While worthy of support, we did not fund the organizations targeted. I remain committed to supporting the Brazilian indigenous communities, local governments, scientists, educators and general public who are working tirelessly to secure the Amazon for the future of all Brazilians."
Next week will most likely Donald Trump weighs in on Robert Pattinson's love-life. Wait, that already happened?
