Although the recent return of 'The X-Files' wasn't as good as one would have hoped, it hasn't stopped Fox from trying to unearth it.

EW is reporting that an animated comedy spin-off series is currently in the works. The series is now in early development at Fox and is titled as 'The X-Files: Albuquerque'. The series will follow a couple of misfit FBI agents who investigate cases that are too weird, ridiculous and dopey - even for Mulder and Scully.

Currently, 'The X-Files' creator Chris Carter is set to act as executive, while 'Paradise PD' writers Rocky Russo and Jeremy Sosenko are penning the script with a presentation due to be delivered to Fox in the months ahead if it's picked up for series. No casting has been announced as of yet, but you've got to imagine David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will make an appearance.

After all, their episode of 'The Simpsons' is easily one of the best of the cameos in the entire series, not the least of it being that Chris Carter described 'The X-Files' being satirised as a great honour.
