It may be boring us to tears this year but for some reason we can't help tuning into the X Factor so, needless to say, we were rather happy to see Sam Callahan head home this weekend and quite confused to see Miley Cyrus doing her 'thang' without flashing the flesh.

Let's start with Sam, shall we? Bless 'im, he was a hard working little thing with enough confidence to float a hot air balloon, but he just wasn't very good. And contrary to errr, popular belief, neither was that save me song of his either.

Nevertheless, Nicole threw her pen in mock disbelief, Gary told the lad he'd go far in the industry (we still haven't forgiven him for Cocozza or Moloney mind you), and Sharon seemed to forget they'd already kicked him off the show as she delivered her verdict after Dermot confirmed the result. The teenies cried, the Twitter audience sighed (with relief), and Sam went on his merry way to TV stardom. You just know you'll be seeing him everywhere now, don't you?

However, while Sam's elimination was most definitely noted, everybody was talking about Miley Cyrus and that rather interesting Wrecking Ball performance. I'm not the biggest fan of her recent antics but have no doubt that the former Disney starlet can 'saaang', so when she came out covered up in a gold slip and turban, blasting out Wrecking Ball from the top of what could only be described as a cardboard cutout sand dune, I actually thought the performance was going places.

It seems poor Miley can't do anything without criticism though: Sure, her vocals went a little wobbly (on quite a few occasions) and yes, the ensemble was a little more Dynasty than it was daring, but her performance wasn't God-awful now, was it? Niall Horan certainly didn't seem to think so, taking to Twitter to stand up for her this morning.

Another weekend, another X Factor storm in a tea cup. Here's to December, when it'll all be over. Until 2014... and 2015... and 2016. Oh dear.
