Stewart, the corgi who plays Cheddar in 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' has passed away at the age of 13.
A rescue corgi, Stewart was one of several dogs who played the role of Cheddar. However, Stewart played the role the longest and was by far the most well-loved of all the dog actors involved. According to a beautiful obituary by EW, the dog was known for being a "goofball" on set and frequently messed up people's lines - yet, naturally, nobody could stay mad at him.
Dan Goor, the showrunner of 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' explained that Stewart ruined a monologue by Captain Holt, played by Andre Braugher, when discussing duty and gravitas. "Every time he began that monologue, Cheddar, who was just off screen, would let out a soft, unending howl, which cracked up everyone on set. Every time."
Stewart passed away two days, with his owners leaving an Instagram post detailing his final day. "We went to the beach (his favorite place) where he frolicked in the surf and then enjoyed a picnic lunch of In & Out burgers. We relaxed in the sun and just enjoyed each other’s company," the post reads. "Our veterinarian met us there later and Stewart went to sleep peacefully in my arms while listening to the sounds of the ocean. He was a one in a million kind of dog, he was my supaah staah."
Rest in power, Cheddar / Stewart.
