There was great news for brand new comedy series 'Abbott Elementary', which picked up two Emmys at this year's awards. One special moment, however, was marred by a certain comedian stealing the spotlight.

Jimmy Kimmel fully committed to an Emmy Awards joke, but it sort of backfired and people are not happy.

During last night's awards ceremony, Kimmel was dragged on stage by his fellow presenter Will Arnett to announce the nominees for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, which was won by 'Abbott Elementaty' creator and star Quinta Brunson. Here's the late-night host being dragged off stage after the award.

And so where was Jimmy Kimmel during the Emmy acceptance speech from Brunson? He was lying on stage in front of her. It was quite a historic moment for the creator, being only the second black woman to ever win an Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series Emmy.

Brunson seemed to take the joke well and later backstage she told reporters that it "didn’t bother me that much (I dunno what the internet thinks)."

She then explained that Kimmel gave her her first major late-night appearance. She then joked that she'll be appearing on his chat show later this week so maybe she'll "punch him in the face".

Jokes aside, those on Twitter were not very impressed with Kimmel for stealing some of the shine from Brunson.
