With 'Santa Clarita Diet' now axed by Netflix, Drew Barrymore's not going to have much time to sit around - or maybe she will, but with cameras and in a TV show format.
Per Variety, Barrymore is now set to join the ranks of celebrity TV show talk show hosts with her own effort. According to reports, the pilot episode is being filmed in New York today and will be up for potential season orders in 2020 and 2021.
Barrymore's been interested in making a stab at TV chat shows for some years now, and was potentially trying to get one off the ground in 2016. Since 'Santa Clarita Diet' was cancelled by Netflix, it's now freed Barrymore up for her own TV chat show.
Obviously, the most successful actor / comedian to talk show host transition in recent years is Ellen DeGeneres and her behemoth of a show, but there have been others through the years. Busy Phillips's show, 'Busy Tonight', had a short stint on E!, perhaps hoping to replace the void left fellow comedy actor Joel McHale's long-running show, 'The Soup'. Famously, Chevy Chase had a short-lived late-night talk show that was then parodied by none other than 'The Simpsons'.
As for Barrymore's show, the pilot will determine if it goes forward to a full series and if it is picked it up, it'll most likely air exclusively on CBS with international distribution happening later, if it happens at all.
