Last night saw one of the most high-profile hacks on Twitter in years, in which the accounts of several celebrities - one of them including Vice President Joe Biden - was targeted by bitcoin scammers.

According to a statement released by Twitter after the incident, the website's admins have begun an investigation and believe that the hack took place as part of a coordinated effort to gain access by people "who successfully targeted some of our employees with access to internal systems and tools."

Among those accounts found to have been targeted include those belonging to Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Joe Biden, Kanye West, Barack Obama, Bill Gates, and the company accounts for Apple and Uber. Each of the impacted accounts posted the same message - offering to double bitcoin if an amount was sent to an address. The scam is a common one with bot accounts on Twitter.

As a result of the hack, Twitter temporarily prevented all blue-tick / verified accounts from tweeting, which then resulted in some pretty great jokes as a result.

Here's a few examples from Irish Twitter.

As it stands, things appear to be back to normal on Twitter, but already, people are questioning just how secure the site really is and whether or not other accounts - like Donald Trump's, for instance - have been compromised in the past and simply has never revealed itself.

It could explain absolutely baffling shit like this.
