Miley Cyrus 'degraded' the 'honourable icon' that is the foam finger with her performance at the MTV Video Music Awards says the prop's inventor.
Steve Chmelar invented the original 'No. 1 hand', which was originally used in support of a high school basketball team, and was shocked to see the 20-year-old singer waging her tongue, gyrating up against Robin Thicke and using a foam finger in a sexually suggestive way at the VMAs last Sunday night.
He thinks Miley's inappropriate use of the prop was wrong, telling the New York Post: 'I would say that it certainly misrepresented its intent to encourage team support. She took an honourable icon that is seen in sporting venues everywhere and degraded it.'
Although Miley's risqué duet of 'Blurred Lines' has been criticised by many celebrities and showbiz commentators, Steve hopes she will be able to 'outlive' the incident and move on with her career.
Steve - who is Vice President of commercial sales at a construction supply company - added: 'Fortunately, the foam finger has been around long enough that it will survive this incident. As for Miley Cyrus, let's hope she can outlive this event and also survive.'
