News of Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth's split came as a shock to many over the weekend.

Although the young couple's relationship had been notoriously on-off for the past decade, the fact that they were married just eight months ago made their parting-of-ways extra surprising.

Since the news broke, Cyrus has been spotted hanging out with (and kissing) Kaitlynn Carter in Italy, while Hemsworth has kept a low profile in his native Australia.

A rep for the former couple released a statement saying: "Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time. Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers. They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy."

Now, however, the actor has broken his silence on the end of their relationship with a short Instagram post.

"Hi all , Just a quick note to say that Miley and I have recently separated and I wish her nothing but health and happiness going forward," he wrote. "This is a private matter and I have not made, nor will I be making, any comments to any journalists or media outlets. Any reported quotes attributed to me are false. Peace and Love."

Cyrus herself has not directly referenced the split, only to say in a cryptic Instagram post that "change is inevitable....  I was taught to respect the planet and its process and I am committed to doing the same with my own..."
