Prime Video's fantasy series 'The Wheel of Time' has been renewed for a third season ahead of the upcoming season 2.

The news was revealed at San Diego Comic Con this week alongside casting updates. Fans were also treated to a behind-the-scenes look of the second season, which doesn't have a premiere date yet.

"I’m so thrilled that we’ll be making a third season of 'The Wheel of Time,'" said Rafe Judkins, series executive producer and showrunner. "'The Shadow Rising' has always been my favourite book in the series, so being able to bring it to television and introduce new audiences to the stories that made me fall in love with these books in the first place is such an honour, and something I’ve been working toward since I first pitched the show years and years ago."

New cast members were also announced at the convention. Ayoola Smart, Ceara Coveney, Natasha O'Keeffe, Gregg Chillingirian, and Meera Syal all join. Irish actor Dónal Finn will replace Barney Harris as Mat Cauthon going forward.

The series is based on the hugely successful novels by Robert Jorden. It stars Rosamund Pike as Moiraine, the leader of the Aes Sedai, as she embarks on a dangerous journey with five young men and women, one of whom is prophesised to be the Dragon Reborn, who will either save or destroy humanity. The books span an impressive fourteen novels, leaving plenty of space for Prime to layout future plans.

Debuted in November last year, the first season was highly successful and became the most watched series premiere on the streamer.

However, Prime have been hesitant to announce a release date for season two. This is to avoid any potential crossover with its mega-budget 'Lord of the Rings' adaptation 'The Rings of Power'. The upcoming fantasy behemoth debuts on the streamer on September 2.
