Amazon have formally announced a series order for a 'Blade Runner' sequel show with Ridley Scott on board as executive producer.
Plot details about the series, titled 'Blade Runner 2099', are currently under wraps. However, by the title alone, we can guess that the series will take place 50 years after the events of the 2017 movie 'Blade Runner 2049'.
Silka Luisa also serves as showrunner and executive producer alongside Scott.
Scott first announced plans for the show last November. "We have already written the pilot for 'Blade Runner' and the bible," he said at the time. "So we’re already presenting 'Blade Runner' as a TV show, probably the first 10 hours.
“The original ‘Blade Runner,’ directed by Ridley Scott, is considered one of the greatest and most influential science-fiction movies of all time, and we’re excited to introduce ‘Blade Runner 2099’ to our global Prime Video customers,” said Vernon Sanders, head of global television for Amazon Studios.
“We are honoured to be able to present this continuation of the ‘Blade Runner’ franchise, and are confident that by teaming up with Ridley, Alcon Entertainment, Scott Free Productions, and the remarkably talented Silka Luisa, ‘Blade Runner 2099’ will uphold the intellect, themes, and spirit of its film predecessors.”
Released in 1982, the original 'Blade Runner' is loosely based on the Philip K. Dick book 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?' It starred Harrison Ford along with Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, and Edward James Olmos. Originally not a success, the film went on to achieve cult status.
'Blade Runner 2099' represents another big move from Amazon in securing and developing large franchises for the small screen. Their most recent 'Lord of the Rings' adaptation 'The Rings of Power' launched this month.
