With much of the country consumed by either watching the Rose of Tralee or taking the mick out of it on Twitter, you'd almost forget that there was other stuff happening in the world.

One of them was the MTV Video Music Awards, which took place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey last night.

As always, it was a star-studded affair with big names in attendance, and some of them even performed, too.

Taylor Swift proved one of the big winners on the night. She took home Video of the Year for 'You Need to Calm Down' and used her speech to rally support for the Equality Act.

She also performed the song, as well as new track 'Lover', live:

Other performers on the night included Lil Nas X with 'Old Town Road'. The young rapper won 'Song of the Year' for the record-breaking track, and performed a Tron-style remix of the song, as well as new track 'Panini':

Miley Cyrus also made an appearance to perform her new song 'Slide Away', released just a week after her split from Liam Hemsworth:

Other performers included one-time Fifth Harmony member Normani performing her breakout hit 'Motivation':

... while A$AP Ferg and Big Sean performed 'Bezerk'.

Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello performed a steamy version of their huge hit 'Senorita':

The show closed with a medley of some of New Jersey's finest contributors to hip-hop, which saw Queen Latifah arrive on a motorbike, as well as her fellow Jersey natives Naughty By Nature, Fetty Wap, Wyclef Jean, Ice-T, Lords of the Underground and Redman:
