Sam Smith will release a new single this coming Friday and it samples the 2001 cult film 'Donnie Darko'.

'To Die For' is described as a 'soothing heartfelt ballad' that sees Smith team up once again with regular collaborator Jimmy Napes and production team Stargate.

It opens with a sample of dialogue from the Richard Kelly-directed film, which was one of Jake Gyllenhaal's first big roles.

Smith said: “Releasing this song is going to be a wild one – I feel like it’s from one of the deepest parts of me. I wrote this with Jimmy Napes and Stargate in LA during a time of self-discovery and heartbreak. This is for all the lonely hearts out there on another Valentine’s Day xx

Smith's last release was last summer's 'How Do You Sleep?' and a cover of Donna Summer's 'I Feel Love', as well as joint release with Normani, 'Dancing with a Stranger'.

It's out this Friday, February 14th so watch this space.
