The former member of the pop duo has launched her political career in the hopes of making a necessary change in Russia.
One half of '00s pop duo t.A.T.u., Julia Volkova, is running for Russian parliament. The former pop star, who is bisexual, is hoping to change the attitude of Russian people and its government.
Julia burst onto the scene back in 2002 with Lena Katina with their music video for 'All The Things She Said'. Let's face it, both the song and accompanying video was pretty revolutionary at the time, causing controversy as it depicted two girls in love with one another.
The pop duo caught everyone's attention following this, and they went on to establish quite a successful music career worldwide. They eventually went on to represent Russia in the 2003 Eurovision Song Contest, finishing in third place with 'Ne Ver', Ne Boysia' (which was shrouded in controversy, a a stark contrast to us sending Mickey Harte and 'We've Got The World' that same year).
However, the group later disbanded and it was revealed that they were never really lovers. Julia Volkova went on to launch a solo music career, and now she's turning her attention to politics.
According to The Calvert Journal, in her campaign video (which you can watch here, but, you know, it's all in Russian), the former singer wants "to change the attitude of those in power towards people".
The 36-year-old continued her campaign video, saying: "Yes, I was not a politician in the past, but as we know, one is not born a politician — one becomes one."
She also admits to "past sins", and she even uses a slogan heralding back to one of her t.A.T.u. hits, "They’re Not Gonna Get Us". She is running to represent the country’s ruling United Russia party, with preliminary elections set to take place this September.
