Many people were unsure if Grimes was playing a joke on fans when she announced her pregnancy in an unorthodox manner last month.

As it turns out, the Canadian musician really is expecting her first baby with entrepreneur Elon Musk.

She hasn't revealed much about the child since then, but a livestream on YouTube the other day saw her expand on certain details - or not, as the case may be.

When a fan asked her whether the baby was a girl or a boy, she replied: "“I don’t want to say the gender of the baby… because I feel like their privacy should be protected.I don’t think they can consent to being famous or being in public."

She added that she wanted to avoid putting a gender label on them altogether, in case it contradicts how they self-identify.

“I don’t want to gender them in case that’s not how they feel in their life," she said. "I don’t know, I just feel like it doesn’t need to be known."

Grimes added that she had already chosen a name for the baby, but refused to reveal it "because everyone I’ve told it hates it, and everyone’s gonna make fun of it."

“But," she added, "it is, in fact, a genius name and people just don’t appreciate it yet because it’s too avant-garde.”

The child will be the first for Grimes, real name Claire Boucher, while Musk is already a father of six.

Of course, she's not the first pop star to state her intention to raise a gender-neutral child; Paloma Faith previously said that she was raising her child gender-neutral. Last year, Sam Smith declared their wish to be addressed by the pronounces 'them' and 'they' instead of 'him'.
