Even though it wasn't what you'd call a critical darling, 'Venom' was hugely successful at the box office and these days, that's enough to warrant a sequel.
So it goes that 'Venom 2' is now officially confirmed, with Tom Hardy signed and ready to reprise his role as Eddie Brock / Venom. While Hardy was confirmed via producer Amy Pascal in an interview with Fandango, the first movie clearly was planning a sequel.
The post-credits scene of 'Venom' revealed a cameo by none other than Woody Harrelson, who foreshadowed the arrival of supervillain Carnage. Harrelson, wearing a giant red wig, announced that once his character got out of prison, "there's gonna be carnage."
Harrelson, meanwhile, hasn't yet been officially announced for the sequel either, but chances are it's only a matter of time before that happens as well. The other topic that came up in the Amy Pascal interview was, of course, when there'd be a Venom / Spider-Man crossover.
Nothing concrete was announced, although Pascal reiterated the standard line that it's something everyone wants to see, but stopped short of revealing anything beyond that. Given how poorly received 'Spider-Man 3' was - the last movie to feature a cross-over with the characters - it makes that they're being somewhat coy about their plans.
'Venom 2' is slated for release on October 2nd, 2020.
