Hollywood has officially gone mental. There's a movie based on 'Barney' in the works. And yes, we do mean Barney the purple dinosaur who featured in many of your childhood TV watching days.

'Barney & Friends' aired from 1992 to 2009 and taught kids the importance of friendship, sharing, imagination and more.

Now Daniel Kaluuya, the star of 'Get Out' and 'Widows' is producing a movie based on the titular lead.

Kaluuya will produce it through his newly formed 59% banner. The other producers on the project are Rowan Riley and Amandla Crichlow, and David Carrico, Adam Paulsen and Bobby Hoppey for Valparaiso.

Kevin McKeon will oversee for Mattel. The toy company has been busy getting features based on its properties made of late. A movie based on 'Hot Wheels' is in development. A 'Barbie' movie with Margot Robbie, Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach attached is also in the pipeline.

If this quote from Kaluuya is anything to go by, we could be getting a gritty take on Barney.

He said: "Barney was a ubiquitous figure in many of our childhoods, then he disappeared into the shadows, left misunderstood.

“We're excited to explore this compelling modern-day hero and see if his message of 'I love you, you love me' can stand the test of time."

Mattel Films' Robbie Brenner stated that the film comprises “a completely new approach to Barney that will surprise audiences and subvert expectations.”

He added: “The project will speak to the nostalgia of the brand in a way that will resonate with adults, while entertaining today’s kids.”

Maybe it'll end up something like that 'Grouch' parody from over the weekend.
