The Crawleys are gearing up to welcome us back to theatres this Christmas with filming finally underway on the drama sequel.

If low-stakes drama is your forte, then we bet you're also pretty excited about 'Downton Abbey 2' hitting movie screens later this year.

The first set photo from Focus Features indicated that filming is already underway on the movie sequel to one of the most popular British drama series in recent memory. According to the picture below, it seems that filming of the movie may already have been happening over the past month or so.

Rob James-Collier's Thomas Barrow can be spotted in the background of the picture, with Kevin Doyle’s Joseph Molesley to the left of shot.

The official Twitter account for the production company shared the image yesterday evening, with the caption: "It's so good to be back."

Following the huge success of the first movie in 2019, many fans were hoping that a sequel movie could be conjured up at a moment's notice. Although 'Downton Abbey 2' was supposedly in the pipeline, everything was delayed over the past year due to you-know-what.

Series creator Julian Fellowes confirmed in early 2020 that the sequel movie would arrive; while star Hugh Bonneville said earlier this year that he and the rest of the crew are "desperate to do it".

The end of the 2019 movie appeared to bit adieu to Maggie Smith's character Violet Crawley - but could she be back for 'Downton Abbey 2: Downton Harder'? All of the cast are believed to be returning, so we'll have to wait until later this year to find out.

Downton Abbey 2' will be in theatres this Christmas.
