'The Goldfinch' is most definitely hoping to be a big contender this Oscar season.

Directed by John Crowley (who earned three Oscar nods for 'Brooklyn'), 'The Goldfinch' is

  1. Based on a globally acclaimed, Pulitzer Prize-winning, New York Times best-selling novel.
  2. Written by an Oscar nominee in Peter Straughan ('Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy').
  3. Stars the likes of Nicole Kidman and rising star Ansel Elgort.
  4. Is, according to the synopsis, "a stirring odyssey of grief and guilt, reinvention and redemption, and even love."

Yup, that's Oscar bait alright.

The film follows Theodore "Theo" Decker. Theo's mother is killed in a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art when he's 13. The tragedy changes the course of his life. Through it all, he holds onto a piece of hope from that terrible day... a painting of a tiny bird chained to its perch. The Goldfinch.

The film also stars Oakes Fegley ('Pete’s Dragon'), Aneurin Barnard ('Dunkirk'), and Finn Wolfhard ('Stranger Things,' 'It'). Sarah Paulson ('American Crime Story'), Luke Wilson, and Jeffrey Wright ('Westworld') co-star.

'The Goldfinch' hits Irish theatres on September 27th 2019.
