Following the set-up that everyone saw coming in 'The Falcon and the Winter Soldier', Marvel and Disney are ploughing ahead with plans for their brand new Captain America.

It has been confirmed that Anthony Mackie will lead Marvel's 'Captain America 4'. Sources informed Deadline of the news yesterday.

This will be the first time that the actor will lead an MCU movie, having always been a secondary character and wingman to Chris Evans' Cap. The events of 'Avengers: Endgame' and of course the Disney+ series with Sebastian Stan's Bucky Barnes, however, has shifted the hierarchy of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

During the climax of 'The Falcon and the Winter Soldier', which has earned itself five Emmy nominations, the Falcon finally picks up the trusty shield and dons his new and improved spandex suit, continuing the legacy started by his former colleague.

As ever, plot details surrounding the Anthony Mackie 'Captain America 4' movie is under wraps at the moment, with the star named as the only actor thus far to be confirmed. It's unknown whether Sebastian Stan will reprise his role as Bucky Barnes/the Winter Soldier - but given the chemistry shared between the two characters during the series run, it's highly likely.

The TV series writer and creator Malcolm Spellman will be back to script 'Captain America 4' alongside Dalan Musson. No director has been confirmed.

Anthony Mackie has enjoyed a number of high-profile roles over the years which have turned him into a well-regarded action hero. 'The Hurt Locker' was one of his first big roles in film, while his most recent was the above-average Netflix war movie 'Outside The Wire' from earlier this year. His other non-action roles from 2021 include his brief appearance opposite Amy Adams in 'The Woman in the Window' and Amazon Prime's anthology series 'Solos'.

'Captain America 4' does not yet have a release date but is likely to be part of Marvel's Phase 5.
