Imagine looking out the passenger window and seeing this.
If you're a nervous flyer, there's probably a good chance you won't want to read this article.
Hell, we do this on a semi-regular basis and it's f*cking terrifying. Delta Flight 1425, an internal flight from Atlanta to Baltimore-Washington International, was forced to make an emergency landing after - and this is Delta's official statement to ABC News - receiving "an indication of a possible issue with one of the aircraft’s engines."
Yes, that sounds about right. You look out the side of the plane and see a part of the engine hanging off and a really bright orange glow from the engine. That's definitely "an indication of a possible issue with one of the aircraft’s engines", for sure. While the exact cause wasn't clear, it does appear that there was a serious engine failure and, looking at the spinny thing hanging off, it was clearly not going to end well had they continued on.
Thankfully, the plane made an emergency landing in Raleigh, North Carolina and all passengers aboard the plane safely disembarked with no injuries or health issues, other than the fact that they were all rightfully terrified.
Speaking to ABC 11, one passenger explained how "we just saw all this smoke come up into the cabin and that’s when we really started freaking out... It started slowing down a little bit and it was getting hot."
The type of plane itself - the MD-88 - is apparently one of the oldest planes in Delta's fleet, and is set to be retired in 2020. This video footage, meanwhile, was taken by Logan Webb and shows the footage of what the engine looked like.
Take a look.
