It's-a me, Chris Pratt
Chris Meledandri, producer of the upcoming 'Super Mario Bros' movie has tried to put people's minds at ease this week by defending Chris Pratt's take on the adventurous plumber.
"When people hear Chris Pratt's performance, the criticism will evaporate. Maybe not entirely. People love to voice opinions, as they should," Meledandri told Deadline.
The casting of Pratt as Mario was met with a mixed reception. There were also reservations about how the actor would approach the over-the-top Italian accent synonymous with the video game character.
"I'm not sure this is the smartest defense, but as a person who has Italian-American heritage, I feel I can make that decision without worrying about offending Italians or Italian-Americans. I think we're going to be just fine."
Previously, Meledandri stated that Pratt would steer clear of an Italian accent for the film, saying it was "not the tenor of the performance."
But it seems Pratt's casting is still an unpopular choice amongst fans. Ignoring his choice of accent, there are still objections over his alleged political and religious beliefs. However, friends in Hollywood including Mark Ruffalo and James Gunn have come to Pratt's defense on these issues.
You all, @prattprattpratt is as solid a man there is. I know him personally, and instead of casting aspersions, look at how he lives his life. He is just not overtly political as a rule. This is a distraction. Let’s keep our eyes on the prize, friends. We are so close now.

There's even been some fan petitions online demanding Pratt is replaced with Danny DeVito, an Italian-American, and all-round great actor.
Pratt will also be voicing Garfield the lasagna-loving cat in an upcoming feature film. It seems Hollywood will not stop until every cartoon character is voiced by the 'Guardians of the Galaxy ' star.
The 'Super Mario Bros.' movie arrives in cinemas in April 2023.
