It's a long time now since the Saw Doctors were riding high in the Irish charts with I Used To Love Her and to many music fans they're a novelty act that's long since passed its sell-by date. It would be a shame, however, if their dodgy image obscured the music, since Villains? is by some distance the best album they've ever made. From straightforward folk-rockers to quirky ditties about romantic encounters in the local chipper, the Tuam lads present their down to earth take on life in small town Ireland with a charm that's surprisingly difficult to resist. Almost every song here has a different combination of writers, which results in a diversity of moods and styles that sometimes makes the album sound rather disjointed. Even so, by the end it's hard not to feel that the Doctors deserve an awful lot more credit than the music press is usually willing to give them
