The Killarney Festival of Music and Food has been cancelled, with organisers releasing a statement last night claiming that 'unforeseen circumstances' had scuppered this weekend's event.

This year marked the first year that the festival was to be held in Co. Kerry; in previous years, it had been known as the Westport Festival of Music and Food and was held in the grounds of Westport House in Co. Mayo.

In recent days, organisers had stated their intention of moving the venue from its planned location at Killarney House to Killarney Racecourse, but last night a spokeswoman for the festival confirmed the cancellation, saying "We are devastated that the festival has been cancelled – we did everything in our power to make it happen this weekend.”

“We would like to extend our sincere apologies to all the festival goers who were planning to attend the event in Killarney and we would like to thank all the local businesses and statutory agencies for their help and support.”

High-profile acts such as Duran Duran, Texas, ABC, Jools Holland, The Proclaimers, Burt Bacharach, Father John Misty and many Irish acts had been scheduled to perform across the weekend.

Organisers said that they are currently in talks with some of the acts about performing "in an alternative indoor venue in Killarney over the weekend", and that they "hope to make an announcement as soon possible."
