The Electric Soft Parade were recently tipped by the NME as one of the ten best new bands in Britain - which, for some cynics, is reason enough to suppose that their career will have gone belly up in two years' time at the most. That would be a shame, though, for this low-key debut album from Brighton brothers Tom and Alex White contains plenty of youthful promise amidst the inevitable false steps and overenthusiasm. Their psychedelic pop mixture contains traces of everyone from Teenage Fanclub to the Verve, but their really distinguishing features are their cheeky, quirky lyrics and keen ear for a winning melody. Whether they can build on this encouraging beginning is open to question, but at the very least the Electric Soft Parade deserve their chance.
