Roger Sanchez has been a superstar DJ for so long that it's hard to believe this is his first solo album. As you might expect he takes the opportunity to indulge himself as much as possible, resulting in ten tracks of garage beats and fuzzy techno tracks that outstay their welcome by a good two minutes each. Clearly Sanchez feels his reputation is so secure that he can play to his well-tested strengths rather than attempt anything groundbreaking - understandable, but still a little disappointing coming from such an obviously great talent. As a party album First Contact does the job efficiently enough but in comparison with new kids on the block such as Basement Jaxx, it suffers from a curious lack of character.
