His work with Elvis Costello and the Pretenders made Nick Lowe one of the icons of British pop - but the uncomfortable truth is that he himself hasn't made a really good album for over a decade. Sadly, his 11th solo effort doesn't really reverse that trend, being another minimally-produced collection of slightly mawkish country ditties that frequently sound either throwaway or only half worked-out. A couple of quirky narrative songs do linger in the memory thanks to some wity lyrics and catchy Nashville strumming, but on the whole Lowe sounds like an artist desperately in need of some kind of reinvention.
