Morrissey has "politely declined" a Gold Medal of Honorary Patronage from Dublin's Trinity College, despite sounding rather pleased about it last month.

The singer-turned-author released a statement on True-to-You.net that simply read "Morrissey has politely declined to accept Trinity College Dublin's Gold Medal Award for Contribution to Music."

Last month, he had said that he felt "undeserving" of the award from the college's Philosophical Society, which has also been awarded to his former bandmate Johnny Marr as well as other entertainment luminaries. He had also gone as far as to mention that the ceremony was scheduled for October.

"My initial reaction is to feel undeserving… my contribution to music being such that no record label on the planet has either the nerve or the imagination to sign me!," he said at the time.
