Okay, here’s one we didn’t quite see coming this morning: Mariah Carey is reportedly in deep discussions to headline this year’s Glastonbury festival.
This one took us by surprise given that Glastonbury is traditionally fronted by guitar bands, save for dalliances with R&B and hip hop in recent years with Jay-Z and Beyonce, but it’s looking increasingly likely that Carey will perform as the headline acts of the Pyramid Stage somewhere between June 28th and 30th. Glastonbury audiences were ultimately receptive to Jay-Z and Beyonce’s (separate) sets but they were highly controversial when originally announced as headliners.
The Evening Standard is quoting a source as saying: “nothing has been signed yet, but discussions have opened and both parties seem keen.”
Carey hasn’t released an album – with the exception of a Christmas record - since 2009’s ‘Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel’ and her fourteenth album is slated for a May 2013 release – good timing for the festival.
We’re not quite sure how the Glastonbury faithful will react to this should it be confirmed. They struggled with the announcements of Jay-Z and Beyonce – two acts with infinitely more ‘street cred’ than Carey – so we suspect this one could be tricky to pull off.
The Rolling Stones are also heavily rumoured to headline.
