For some time now, pop maverick Jay Kay has been far more famous for his big hats and celebrity relationships than his actual music - a shame, perhaps, but a situation with which he seems entirely comfortable. His new album is as frustratingly inconsistent as its predecessors, leading to the suspicion that he himself isn't the best judge of his own work. A Funk Odyssey certainly has its moments, mostly built around some infectious riffs and lively space age disco grooves. Elsewhere, however, it descends into bland, daytime radio fare with perfunctory lyrics and songs with virtually no sense of direction. Jamiroquai's Best Of album will certainly be worth having but that's more than you can say for this half-hearted effort.
