Sad news this morning, as it has been revealed that Scott Weiland - frontman of rock bands Stone Temple Pilots and supergroup Velvet Revolver - has died. He was 48.

According to a post on his official Facebook page, Weiland died in his sleep while on tour with his current band The Wildabouts.

"Scott Weiland, best known as the lead singer for Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver, passed away in his sleep while on a tour stop in Bloomington, Minnesota, with his band The Wildabouts," it read. "At this time we ask that the privacy of Scott’s family be respected."

He had struggled with substance abuse problems throughout his life,  being arrested numerous times over the past two decades for various related offences - but nonetheless enjoyed enormous success with Stone Temple Pilots, the band he formed in 1989.

In 2002, he formed rock supergroup Velvet Revolver with Slash, Duff McKagan, Matt Sorum and Dave Kushner, releasing two albums with them before leaving in 2008.

In 2013, he was dismissed from STP and Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington temporarily took over before departing earlier this year.
