Hot on the heels of their new album, Britpop also-rans Echobelly unleash this Best Of compilation, possibly as a reproach to the critics who consigned them to such a long period in the wilderness. And indeed, there's more than enough good songs here to suggest that the bands' reputation as second-rate Smiths copyists will have to be revised. This is spiky indie-pop, raised above the average by some killer tunes and Sonya Aurora Madan's plummily seductive vocals. You can see why so many people disliked them at the time - they often sounded insufferably smug - but it's also clear that they deserve a lot more respect than they've been given up to now. Well worth investigating.
