By now, anyone who had Britney Spears down as just another passing teen queen should be realising their mistake. One month shy of her 20th birthday, this coquettish sex kitten is simply one of the biggest stars the pop world has to offer - the question now is whether her music can rise to the image. It's a question that's only partially answered on Britney, her frustratingly uneven third album. A host of big-name collaborators have been drafted in, including the Neptunes, Rodney Jerkins and Dido, but their contributions sound oddly perfunctory and certainly don't rank with their best work. Luckily for Britney, the album is saved by a handful of infectious R'n'B tracks that are just waiting to become massive hit singles. Enough to keep her at the top for a while, then - but if she's serious about wanting to be a respected artist, she needs to raise her game.
