Star Trek
1966"Star Trek" is an American sci-fi drama that boldly went where no one dared to go in the 1960s and became a cultural phenomenon. Gene Roddenberry's vision set the tone for the science fiction genre as it's known today, breaking down cultural barriers by telling an idealistic tale of acceptance. The crew controversially combined culturally diverse members at a time when America was embedded in the Cold War, and adjusting to its role as the pre-eminent superpower. Roddenberry's innovation pushed this further in ‘Plato's Stepchildren', when Kirk (William Shatner) and Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) shared the first interracial kiss on American television. Each episode aboard the USS Enterprise taught an important moral lesson to the backdrop of a space battle or mission on an alien world. The heart of the show was always the relationships between Kirk, Spock (Leonard Nimoy), McCoy (DeForest Kelley) and Uhura. The show was not viewed as a success when it was first shown and was cancelled after just three seasons. However, intense fan pressure led to the series switching to the big screen in 1979 and spawned a number of spin-off ventures. This came full circle in 2009, when JJ Abrams successfully rebooted the Star Trek franchise, returning to the much-loved characters of the original series.
