Children in Need

1980

The televised version of 'Children in Need' has been raising money for charities working with youngsters in the UK since 1980, but its origins date back to a radio appeal made in 1927. Although ongoing, its highlight is the annual telethon staged on BBC One and BBC Two each November. The marathon programme incorporates a variety of showbiz events featuring well-known faces and airs short films showing where the money raised will be spent. The involvement by members of the general public as they adopt innovative ways to raise funds is also an important component. A yellow teddy bear called Pudsey has been the programme's mascot since 1985.
