'Bread' is a Carla Lane-penned British sitcom following the antics of the Boswell family, a Liverpool-based Catholic clan who live a reasonably comfortable life thanks to government handouts and cash-in-hand jobs. Matriarch Nellie (Jean Boht) steers her family through life without any help from her estranged husband Freddie (Ronald Forfar), who spends most of his time chasing after brazen hussy 'Lilo Lill' (Eileen Pollock). It is left to her grown-up children, Joey (Peter Howitt), Jack (Victor McGuire), Adrian (Jonathon Morris), Billy (Nick Conway) and Aveline (Gilly Coman), to bring home the bacon every week. They live next door to Grandad (Kenneth Waller), a cantankerous old man who the family take turns in visiting. Few of the younger characters have any particular aspirations, though Adrian harbours ambitions of becoming an actor and Aveline is desperate to find love. Howitt and Coman left the show at the end of the fifth series; they were replaced by Graham Bickley and Melanie Hill respectively. The show premiered on BBC One in 1986 and ran for five years. At its peak it attracted 21 million viewers. In the first episode, Billy makes a splash in the antiques world and Joey claims an incontinence allowance for Grandad.
