With Star Trek Discovery now nearing our screens, the question of casting is starting to gain a bit of traction.

While there's been hints and rumours that the series will take place between The Next Generation and the original Star Trek, nothing has been confirmed as of yet. One person, however, who's been asked quite a few a questions about the new series is William Shatner, formerly of the original Star Trek series, TJ Hooker and, uh, American Psycho 2.

When asked by TV Guide about Star Trek Discovery, Shatner replied that he'd be up for appearing - but only if he was useful. "Leonard (Nimoy, who played Spock), my friend, did a cameo. I said to him, 'You know you're old when you go back in time and you're still old.' It was a cameo, and I thought, 'That's a waste of time. He's so talented. Why didn't they do something more with him?' So that's the way I feel about that."

In fairness, it's highly unlikely that Shatner would be brought in for a cameo for Star Trek Discovery. The character was killed off in the so-so Star Trek Generations film with Patrick Stewart, so it'd take a lot of time-travelling and rejigging for Shatner to reappear as Kirk.

Moreover, there's a whole cast of characters in Star Trek: The Next Generation who could be called upon to cameo. Where's that Worf series that people have been crying out for, for example? What about Commander Riker? Jonathan Frakes is off directing television shows now, but he could surely be convinced to grow out his beard and slick back the hair again, right?

The point is, William Shatner's not the only cameo worth looking at for Star Trek Discovery. What do you think? Would you be up for seeing William Shatner cameoing in Star Trek Discovery? Who do you want to see cameo, for that matter? Let us know in the comments!
