Underground, overground, wombling free, the Wombles of Wimbledon Common are poised for a return to TV, thanks to the man who made them singing sensations back in the 1970s.

Songwriter Mike Batt told his fans that he is now the major shareholder in Wombles Copyright Holdings, and had big plans for author Elisabeth Beresford's fuzzy friends. The gang first appeared in Beresford's books back in 1968, before making their small screen debut in 1973. Then they took the charts by storm with this little ditty...

"Suffice to say we have plans for two new 26-part TV series, a feature-length movie and an interactive online Wombles World experience" Batt wrote."We think the Wombles characters are timeless, funny and lovable, and we can assure the Beresford estate that we shall protect and look after the quality and integrity of the characters as we always have done."

"We think there are audiences of new children and international audiences who missed the Wombles the first time around and will be thrilled to see the brilliant high-quality animations and new musical productions we shall be mounting" he continued.

Original narrator Bernard Cribbins is still alive, so we do hope he's involved with any potential reboot: Sure what would Great Uncle Bulgaria say if he wasn't?

And on a slightly more amusing note, good luck getting the theme tune out of your head for the rest of the evening.
