According to the show's host, the "best ever" contestant has claimed the top prize on the iconic quiz series.

There's a new millionaire in the UK following a 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire' contestant being crowned the series' first big winner in 14 years. No details have been revealed about the contestant, as the episode has yet to air, but host Jeremy Clarkson said that they knew "just about everything" of each question asked.

This is the first time that Clarkson has been able to congratulate a top-prize winner. The host, who also co-hosts 'The Grand Tour' on Amazon Prime, said of his delight at being able to crown a winner this series. He said: "Well, I'm absolutely thrilled and delighted that we've found someone who seems to know just about everything. I can't wait for the viewers to see it and I want to watch it back too.

"I was just in awe of this contestant and think they are probably the best the show has ever had in its 22-year history. It was a joy to sit and watch it unfold."

He spoke of how the 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire' contestant "whizzed through the 15 questions".

The host then described the moment of being able to say "You've just won £1 million", adding "I wasn't sure I'd ever get to utter those immortal six words and I'm not embarrassed to say, it was a little emotional but boy did it feel good."

This contestant is now only the sixth person to ever make it all the way and win the £1 million prize after 15 questions.

Filming of the latest series took place during COVID-19 restrictions this summer, which meant there was no studio audience and no chance of any cheating coughs to be heard. Due to the lack of audience, the lifeline was replaced with two "Phone a Friend" options instead. In the new iteration of the series, the other two options are "50:50" and "Ask the Host".

Chris Tarrant was the show's original host back when it started 22 years ago, with Clarkson taking over the reins in this new version in 2018. The Irish edition of the series ran for two series with Gay Byrne as host, but no contestant ever claimed the top prize.

In case you'd forgotten, here's the well-known cheater from the series, Charles Ingram, who was helped by coughs from the audience.
