Pat Shortt could easily have you fooled as just a one-trick pony when you see him in the likes of D'Unbelievables and Killinaskully, but still waters run deep with this Tipperary actor, as he undoubtedly first proved in Lenny Abrahamson's Garage back in 2007.

Shortt affirms this once more as he makes his return to television shortly in this three-part drama for TV3, written and directed by the IFTA winning Gerard Barrett, the Kerry man responsible for Pilgrim Hill, Glassland and the most recent, Brain on Fire, starring Chloe Grace Moretz.

Called Smalltown, it tells the story of Conor (Charlie Kelly), who is urged to leave his rural home by his father (Shortt) and mother to head for pastures new in London, however he must return later down the line when his mother gets sick. It follows his struggle to re-adapt to his home town and the changes that have taken place while he's been away, both in the town and with his relationship with other family members.

From the trailer below, it looks like it is not to be missed.

Smalltown premieres on TV3 on the 1st September.
