Like any good sitcom or drama series, there has to be a mother figure at the centre of it all. No doubt rolling her eyes and dispensing sage advice to all, our favourite TV shows are made all the better by mammies. Here's five of the best in TV history...

5. PIPPA ROSS - Home & Away

Ah Pippa. Bless her and her swarm of foster children. Seriously, how many foster children did she have down through the years? Ten? Twenty? Craziness. You'd never see it on this side of the world.

4. ROSEANNE CONNOR - Roseanne

Say what you want about Roseanne, it was real. Harshly real. Roseanne's caustic drawl might haven't been everybody's cup of tea, but the show was as sarcastic and witty as Roseanne herself. That laugh haunts our childhood.

3. JOYCE SUMMERS - Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Christ, when Buffy's mother died, we all lost. Poor 'oul Joyce. Buffy never recovered. Neither did we.

2. LOIS GRIFFIN - Family Guy

It's been covered several times, but Peter Griffin was punching WAY above his weight when he landed Lois as a wife. Red-head, rich and her brother was voiced by Robert Downey Jr. Peter didn't know what he had.

1. MARIE BARONE - Everybody Loves Raymond

Probably the most realistic mother on this list, everybody's had a similar interaction the way Ray's had with his mother. Just watch this. It's insane how accurate this is.
