€1 million in funding has been awarded to Element Pictures from the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland's Sound and Vision fund for their upcoming three-part production of Citizen Charlie, an RTE drama about former Taoiseach and professional gouger Charlie Haughey.

The project, described as a trilogy of 90-minute dramas, will document former Taoiseach Haughey's pursuit of power, wealth and glamour and will no doubt be one of 2013's most anticipated television programmes.

Colin Teevan is the scribe responsible for the series, and no casting or crew decisions have been made just yet.

Jane Gogan, RTEs commissioning editor for drama, had this to say of the project: "Charles J Haughey is a figure in Irish life on which everyone has a point of view, but this drama will be as much about Ireland as it is about one man."

In total, a figure of €4.5 million was handed out by the fund to 79 television and radio projects. The Sound and Vision fund allocates 7% of the annual television license fee to independent producers.

Who will play Haughey, then? Simon Delaney's usually available…
