If you've read Philip Pullman's 'His Dark Materials' trilogy, you'll be extremely excited by the following trailer.

Considering how Chris Weitz's 'Golden Compass' 2007 movie adaptation of the fantasy novels was roundly panned (although we quite liked it), there's a lot riding on the forthcoming BBC TV adapation.

The first trailer was revealed at San Diego Comic-Con yesterday, and it already has people champing at the bit for more.

With newcomer Dafne Keen taking on the role of the tenacious Lyra Belacqua, she is joined in the cast by James McAvoy, Ruth Wilson and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

If you're not familiar with the plot, the His Dark Materials trilogy is set in another world that is like ours, but where everyone has a 'daemon' - the living embodiment of their soul - joined to them in animal-form. Lyra is the main character as she gets pulled into a dark plot involving kidnapped children who are being brought north to the Arctic Circle for sinister purposes involving something called 'dust'.

There's no date set for broadcast as yet, but it'll air on BBC/HBO this autumn. A second series has already been green-lit.
