Released between 1995 and 2000, Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy was a childhood staple and sat along the Harry Potter series on many bookshelves.

Philip Pullman has decided to return to the world of the books, and more specifically the character of Lyra Belacqua. The new trilogy is called The Book of Dust, and the first instalment will be released on October 19th of this year. The first book will focus on the early years of Lyra's life, and how she ended up living in Jordan College.

Unlike Harry Potter, His Dark Materials did not experience a successful transition to the big screen. The first book, Northern Lights, was adapted into a film starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig but disappointed at the box office and failed to launch a franchise. Production is currently underway on a BBC television adaption of the series.
