Homeland's Claire Danes and Damian Lewis brought home the coveted Best Actress/Actor gongs, with Lewis batting off particularly stiff competition in the form of Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston and Mad Men's Jon Hamm.
When collecting his award, Lewis seemed to know what everyone else in the room was thinking at the time:
"I'm one of those pesky Brits, I apologise". Then he went on to prove himself to be just that, spouting: "I don't really believe in judging art, but I thought I'd show up just in case."
The rest of his acceptance speech was less irksome, and went a little something like this: "What an extraordinary honour to be in a category with these golden actors setting a gold standard in acting in a golden age of TV. The cast that I work with who are delightful and enjoyable to dine with but especially to the two ladies who've suffered me the most, Claire Danes and Marina Baccarin. You're both beautiful and it's enjoyable working with you, every minute of it… Biggest thank you of all to the leading lady of my life Helen McCrory, I adore you darling, thank you for being here… My two children at home thought daddy had been nominated for an Emma. Well, Manon and Gulliver, Daddy just won an Emma."
Yes, Damian Lewis named one of his children Gulliver.
According to reports from the press room, he might just have a hand in naming Claire Danes' baby when it arrives. Speaking with journalists regarding their wins, Lewis said: "We're going to go away to a romantic island together, just for the weekend. When that baby is a ginger, you guys are going to have a field day."
As previously mentioned, Danes landed the Best Actress award, and was sure to thank her husband Hugh Dancy after forgetting to thank her parents many moons ago when accepting an award for My So Called Life, saying: "My husband, my love, my life, my baby daddy. I couldn't do anything without you. I love you so much and I am so grateful.'
Other big winners on the night included Julie Bowen who beat cast mate Sofia Vergara to the Best Comedy Actress Award, with her Modern Family co-star Eric Stonestreet bagging Best Comedy Actor ahead of Ty Burrell, Ed O'Neill and Jesse Tyler Ferguson. Accepting his award, he graciously said: "I wouldn't be standing here without Jesse Tyler Ferguson,' he said on the podium. 'There is no Cam without Mitch." And he didn't say it in a fey way; this is the man who recently split with his long term girlfriend to start dating - wait for it - Charlize Theron. To clarify, Cam off Modern Family is dating Charlize Theron, He really can seduce the prettiest girl in the room. A random source keen to spill said: "They started off as friends but things are blossoming between them, Eric is down to earth and funny and Charlize thinks the world of him. It’s early days but they’re very fond of each other."
Back to the Emmys: Dame Maggie Smith won Best Supporting Actress for Downton Abbey; Louis CK won Outstanding Writing in a Comedy series; Jon Cryer won Lead Actor in a Comedy for Two and a Half Men (Ashton Kutcher didn't turn up, he was at a Chicago Bears game with Mila Kunis); while the Lead Actress in a Comedy gong deservedly went to Julia Louis-Dreyfus for Veep.
